In the West, often called monkey king or simply monkey, is a main character in the Chinese novel Journey to the West. He is a leading cultural and folk figure across Asia.
It was born from the inside of a rock on Huaguo Mountain, with the winds and moon shaping the stone as a monkey that came to life in a supernatural way.
He also became the protector of the Buddhist monk Xuan Zang, also known as Tang san zang, "Tripitaka of the Tang Empire," an honorary title given to monks who had mastered the entire Buddhist canon, who left China in India in the 7th century to report and translate authentic texts from the "Consciousness Alone" stream (called Yogacara).
