In the West, sun Wùkunng, often referred to as a monkey king or simply monkey, is a main character in the Chinese novel Journey to the West. He is a leading cultural and folkloric figure throughout Asia.
The winds and moon forming the monkey stone were born from the inside of a rock on Huaguo Mountain.
He soon becomes the leader of a tribe of monkeys who safely take up residence in the cave of the water curtain on the mountain of flowers and fruits.
He reigned happily over the monkeys for many years until he finally began to realize his own mortality.
Seeking a way to become immortal, Wùk-ng first trains under a Taoist patriarch and masters many magical spells.
When the ten judges of the dead come for him, he fights back, succeeding in erasing his name and all the names of the monkeys from the book of life and death. The judges of the dead denounce him to the Emperor of Jade for these misdeeds.
At the residence of the immortals on Mount Peglai, Wùkunng is appointed guardian of the celestial horses to avoid trouble. When he discovers his pro;otion has a low rank, he rebels, calling himself "Great Sage, equal from heaven".
After a long struggle, the gods were forced to recognize this title, and Wùkunng was appointed guardian of the garden of the fishers of the immortalism of X-Wunm M.
When he learns that the B-Xion have excluded him from an important banquet, he rebels again, stealing the immortality peaches of X-Wunng M, the longevity pills of Lao Tzu and the royal wine of the Jade Emperor, devouring them all. He then returns to the cave of the water curtain, where the army of the sky attacks. The entire army was defeated by The Wùkong and Erlang Shen, the greatest general in the sky.
Buddha Vairocana finally traps Wùkunng in a mountain, under a seal with the mantra Om Mani Padme Hum. Here he stays until Guunyon makes him a disciple of Xuunzàng. He accompanies Xuonzàng on the journey to retrieve sutras from India, alternately protecting his companions and causing harm. Wùkong finally attains enlightenment and becomes a Buddha, finally obtaining his much-desired immortality.
