Moonstone colloquial trade name refers to a Feldspath, the adular, which is characterized by a shimmering silvery to bluish reflection that seems to float on the surface of the stone. This optical effect is called adularescence in the case of a potassium Feldspar (Adular) or peristeria in the case of a sodocalcic Feldspar (Peristeitis). It can also be called the "Schiller effect" in both cases. It is caused, among other things, by the reflection and scattering of light on microscopic internal particles. From India, the Moonstone may not show a Schiller effect but rather a satin appearance due to an interaction between shadows and light, in shades of light beige until dark brown-red. Other optical effects of the Moonstone are appreciated such as shimmer, asterism, opalescence and sometimes adventurecence. It is most often cut in cabochon to highlight all these effects.
