Mahakala is practiced and revered in all the "tantric" schools of Tibetan Buddhism. However, it is portrayed in different ways, each with distinct qualities and aspects. It is also considered to be the emanation of different beings, namely Avalokite-vara (tibetan Chenrezig) or Cakrasamvara (Tibetan Korlo Demchog, or 'khor-lo bde-mchog according to the Wylie system) in the Kagy-apa and Shangpa traditions. There are several kinds of forms of Mahakala which as a protector is emanated from the essence of the tantra for which he is responsible. Thus there are special protectors in the tantras fathers, mothers and non-duels of the Mahamudra, other kinds and forms of protectors exist in schools that claim to be of the Dzogchen.
Mahakala is classically black. Just as all colors are absorbed and dissolved in black, all names and shapes are said to blend into those of Mahakala, symbolizing its global and complete nature. Black can also represent the total absence of color, and again in this case it means the nature of Mahakala as ultimate or absolute reality. This principle is known in Sanskrit as "nirguna", beyond any quality and form, and it is symbolized by both interpretations.
Mahakala is almost always depicted with a crown of five skulls, which feature the transformation of the five kleshas (the afflictions) into the Five Wisdoms of Buddha.
The most notable variation in Mahakala's manifestations and representations is the number of his arms and postures, but the other details may also vary. For example, in some cases there are Mahakalas in white, with multiple heads, without genitals, standing on variable numbers of various things, holding various instruments, with alternative ornaments, and so on.
