Representation of bats
The bat is a symbol of happiness to the Chinese as the 'bat' bian fu word play on the word 'happiness' fu. The drawing of two bats facing represents a 'double happiness', shuang fu.
The bat is also a symbol of longevity. In "book of plant medicine', written in the late sixteenth century, it is said the bat lives up to old age and his blood, his gallbladder and wings have healing properties that improve eyesight and extend the life.
