The symbolism of the Mexican skull as we know it today comes from an ancestral tradition already practiced by the Incas, Aztecs and Mayans, who kept the skull of their deceased relatives as a trophy and a souvenir of the life led by the deceased. The skull was the part of the skeleton that they chose to keep because the head was considered the most important thing in the body, the one that contained the memories.
Sometimes the skull can be associated with an owl, from which it is surmounted. In the symbolism of the Mexican skull, this bird represents the protector of the dead, since the owl is the guardian of the underworld. It is also one of the symbols of wisdom, which the dead reach. As a rule, the owl is depicted with its eyes open and wings closed around the skull.
