DHARMAPALA MAHAKALA
Mahakala is practiced and revered in all "tantric" schools of Tibetan Buddhism. However, it is portrayed in different ways, each with distinct qualities and aspects. It is also considered to be the emanation of different beings, namely Avalokiteśvara (in Tibetan Chenrezig) or Cakrasamvara (in Tibetan Korlo Demchog, or 'khor-lo bde-mchog according to the Wylie system) in the Kagyüpa and Shangpa traditions. There are several kinds of forms of Mahakala that as a protector is emanated from the essence of the tantra for which he is responsible. Thus, there are particular protectors in the father, mother and non-dual tantras of the Mahamudra, other types and forms of protectors exist in the schools that claim to be from the Dzogchen.

Mahakala is classically black in color. Just as all colors are absorbed and dissolved in the dark, all names and shapes are said to blend with those of Mahakala, which symbolizes his global and complete nature. Black can also represent the total absence of color, and again in this case it means the nature of Mahakala as ultimate or absolute reality. This principle is known in Sanskrit as "nirguna", beyond all quality and form, and it is symbolized by both interpretations.

Mahakala is almost always depicted with a crown of five skulls, which depict the transformation of the five kleshas (afflictions) in the Five Wisdoms of Buddha.

The most notable variation in Mahakala's manifestations and depictions is in the number of his arms and postures, but the other details may vary as well. For example, in a few cases there are Mahakalas in white, with multiple heads, without genitals, standing on varying numbers of various things, holding various instruments, with alternative ornaments, and so on.
