it is very difficult to determine the exact origin of the sak yant, it should apparently come from the Khmer (+/- 3000 years ago). It is a geometric pattern made from images of Buddha, Bodhisattvas, Lotus or other Buddhist symbols supposed to attract luck, wealth, blessing and repel evil spirits.
The first "Sak Yant" were made in Buddhist temples, monks were tattooed religious texts by great masters as protection. Over time many soldiers visited these temples in order to get tattooed different patterns having the power of protection, invisibility and strength. A Thai legend tells that Thailand was never occupied because soldiers are "ghost warriors" impossible to see or kill thanks to their protective tattoo.
