The chatoyance of this Quartz, called Pietersite or lightning quartz is caused by the presence of many parallel asbestiform inclusions of crocidolite, a variety of fibrous riebeckite of the amphibole family. In the case of Pietersite, these inclusions may or may not have been oxidized by iron and may be side-by-side, in the form of messy, silky-looking spots, yellow to brown or gray to bluish. Its best definition would be a brechic aggregate consisting essentially of Tiger's Eye and Falcon's Eye. Relatively rare, the world's main source of fine ornamental quality is Namibia.
