Seraphinite is the trade name of a particular form of clinochlor, a member of the chlorite group.
Seraphinite apparently acquired its name due to its resemblance to feathers due to its shimmering. Seraphinite takes its name from biblical seraphim or seraphim angels. With some specimens, the resemblance is quite strong, with shorter feathery growths resembling down leading to longer "flight feathers"; the resemblance even stimulates fanciful marketing phrases like "silver plume seraphiphite." Seraphinite is usually dark green to gray in color, has a shimmering.
