The dragon is both a mythological and folkloric creature in China. Present in the founding myths of Chinese civilization - Yu the Great would have obtained the help of one of these creatures - Chinese dragons, or Long, are very different from their Western "cousins".


While the latter are evil beings in the legends of the European Middle Ages, the dragons of China, and by extension Asia are generally benevolent beings, even if Buddhist thinkers have introduced the idea that some dragons could be responsible for destruction as a result of human affronts.

Of the approximately 360 tortoiseshell creatures in Chinese mythology, the dragon occupied the top of a hierarchy. It was represented by a mixture of several animals but there were a significant number of varieties of dragons depending on its habitat.

The dragon may possess horns or deer antlers. It is also often depicted with wings covered with scales or hairs. This dragon, the one we know best, is decked out with powerful claws and the air it blows can become cloud, rain or fire.



Dragons are the guardians of crystal skulls

The dragon is a figure frequently encountered in alchemy. It symbolizes the change of state, transmutation.

In Buddhism, the dragon becomes protector of the Dharma, vairocana's vehicle, the white Buddha sitting in the east (or center). His throne supported by Dragons probably derives from the Chinese imperial throne. The Turquoise Dragon is the mount of a large number of protective deities, guardians of treasures and gods of rain and thunderstorms. As guardians of treasures, Sino-Tibetan Dragons are the counterparts of Indian nagas. The Tibetan term druk (tib.brug) means both "dragon" and "thunder". Bhutan, a Buddhist kingdom, is called Druk Yul (Land of the Dragon). Its inhabitants, the drukpas, take their name from the spiritual lineage drukpa kagyu, originally from Tibet. This lineage was established by the sage Tsangpa Gyaré who, having once observed nine dragons disappearing in the sky near Gyantse decided to establish the monastery of Ralung. In Tibetan Buddhism, the rise to heaven of a group of Dragons is a sign of good omen.
