Royston turquoise originates from the Royston mining district near Tonopah, Nevada and has been mined since the early 1900s. "Royston Turquoise" originally consisted of four former Turquoise dealerships located in the Royston range: Bunker Hill, Easter Blue, Oscar Wehrend and Royal Blue. The Royal Blue mine was responsible for the majority of the turquoise mined in the area and is often referred to as Royston Royal Blue.

The Royston mine produces an incredible turquoise that ranges in color from deep sky blue to dark green. Often, the colors merge in the same stone with the marbled or webbed golden brown matrix. The mine currently produces material with a very high grade, but in limited quantities. Visitors to the mine can pay to dig into the large piles of tailings in order to recover beautiful medium quality material while the owners hunt the largest veins. The mines are mainly owned and operated by the Otteson family.

The use of turquoise and other stones as a personal ornament by the Southwest Indians dates back to prehistoric times, and the use of silver by the Navajo, Zuni and Hopi Indians is more than 100 years old.
