Medusa, also called the Gorgon, is in Greek mythology one of the three Gorgons (along with her sisters Euryale and Stheno).
Daughter of Phorcys and Keto, and thus granddaughter of the union of the Earth (Gaia) with the Ocean (Pontos), she is the only one of the three sisters to be mortal.
She belongs to the group of primordial deities, as do her cousins, the Chimera and the Hydra of Lerne, who also had features associated with the image of the serpent and were destroyed by heroes. Although it appears on the pediment of several temples, it was not the subject of any worship.
His eyes have the power to petrify any mortal who crosses his gaze. After being beheaded by Perseus, his head is handed over to Athena who fixes him on his aegis. The representation of the gorgoneion will long be used as a protection against the evil eye.
"from the fast jaws of the Gorgons pursuing Perseus rises a garish complaint and these cries escape both from their mouths of young girls and from the horrible heads of the snakes associated with them. This high-pitched, inhumane cry is the one that the dead in Hades make heard beyond the grave."
