Labradorite (( Ca , Na ) ( Al , Si ) 4 O 8 ) is a feldspar mineral first identified in Labrador, Canada, which may exhibit an iridescent effect.

Labradorite is an intermediate to calcium member of the plagioclases series. It has a percentage of anorthitis (%An) between 50 and 70. The density varies from 2.68 to 2.72. The drag is white, like most silicates. The refractive index ranges from 1.559 to 1.573 and pairing is common. As with all members of plagioclase, the crystal system is triclinic and three directions of cleavage are present, two of which are almost at right angles and are more obvious, being of good to perfect quality. (The third direction is mediocre.) It occurs in the form of light grains, white to gray, in slatted blocks in commonmafic igneous rocks such as basalt and gabbro , as well as in anorthosites
Labradorite can display an iridescent optical effect (or schiller) known as labradorescence. The term labradorescence was coined by Ove Balthasar Bøggild, who defined it (labradorization) as follows: Labradorization is the particular reflection of light from submicroscopic planes oriented in one direction (rarely in two directions); these planes never have a position such that they can be expressed by simple clues, and they are not directly visible under the microscope.
