The Mogao Caves are part of the larger set of Dunhuang Caves in Gansu Province, China, on the edge of the Gobi Desert. These chapels were elaborated in 735 caves, including 492 with painted and / or carved decoration, and carved into the rock by monks from the first century. Monastic communities soon began to pierce larger cavities in the sandstone as acts of public devotion, and to adorn shrines with Buddha effigies. This type of cave with multitudes of paintings and sculptures of Buddha receive the generic name of caves of the thousand Buddhas. Some of these caves house, moreover, Buddha statues of very large dimensions.
Buddhist monks placed tens of thousands of manuscripts and paintings in a small room adjoining one of the caves, and this room was then walled - it is not known at what time, or under what circumstances.
