The shimmering of this Quartz, called Pietersite or lightning quartz is caused by the presence of many parallel asbestiform inclusions of crocidolite, a variety of fibrous riebeckite of the amphibole family. In the case of Pietersite, these inclusions may or may not have been oxidized by iron and may or may not have been found side-by-side, in the form of disordered stains with a silky appearance, yellow to brown or gray to bluish. Its best definition would be a brecciated aggregate consisting essentially of Tiger's Eye and Falcon's Eye. Relatively rare, the world's main source of beautiful ornamental quality is Namibia.
