Malachite and azurite are two copper carbonates.
Azurite, as the name suggests, is blue. The name Azurite is taken from the Persian word lazhward, which means "blue".
Which obviously leaves malachite as green. You might wonder if malachite was named after the Old Testament prophet, but it was not. Its name derives from the Latin word for the green leaves of the purple plant - changed from molochitus (in Latin) to Malachite in the middle of the 17th century.

The chemical formulas are Cu 2 (CO 3) (OH) 2 (malachite) and Cu 3 (CO 3) 2 (OH) 2 (azurite), and the two minerals are frequently found in the oxidized zones of copper deposits. These are secondary minerals, which means that they were formed by alteration of the original copper ore minerals.

Now, why are the colors different?. Copper (Cu) atoms, in both malachite and azurite, are surrounded by 4 oxygen atoms essentially in a square. But in azurite, this square is more deformed than in malachite, and therefore the oxygen atoms approach differently the d orbitals of Cu. This leads to orbital energies d that are different in the two minerals, and thus different parts of the spectrum are "removed" by moving the electrons d between the orbitals.
